16 March 2010 - 18:51HTC HD2 Set to Sail or Fail

These days it seems that every new cell phone that is released is overly hyped about, ready to bring you what no other phone has offered before, able to fill a need that’s so prevalent that no one should go without this or that phone. This “over-hype” for every new electronic device, specially cell phones, makes it difficult for down-to-earth consumers and everyday people to weed out and pick a phone that truly comes once a year (that’s a long-time in the cell phone industry). So if you’re reading this article with guarded reserve and a healthy dose of pessimism for this phone I’m about to introduce, it is well justified. The “latest and greatest” phone for the multi-media geared cell phone user is the……T-Mobile HTC HD2.

The T-Mobile HTC HD2 is a phone with a spear-point-like objective: to make the mobile multi-media experience unforgettable. Until now the purpose of most cell phones seems lost in the plethora of features they offer, capable of playing video, audio, taking pictures, or being able to do everything. I guess the old saying holds true, “jack of all trades, master of none.” The HTC HD2, however, has an ultimate goal, a purpose, with its large 4.3 in. LCD screen, to watch videos;  1Ghz processor, to run those videos; built in media-player, to view videos; and large 16gb memory card, to store videos.  Sure, the phone is capable of doing most things other cell phones can do, like take grainy pictures, browse the web, send e-mails, and so on, but the HTC HD2 stands tall, claiming its stake as a dominant multimedia phone.

Using the iPhone as a measuring stick to see how good a phone is seems to be the trend these days. You’ll hear iPhone killer this and iPhone killer that. However give the HD2 its proper space and appreciate its distinct features and you’ll appreciate the phone for what it was meant to do. When the iPhone was first released, it wasn’t advertised to do any one thing exceptionally well. Sure it makes calls, plays videos, sends e-mails and surfs the web, but did it do any of those things remarkably well? What the iPhone does have is integration. The way it seamlessly moves from one app to another and how all the core apps “talk to each other.” The HTC HD2 again goes back to its sole purpose, to watch videos.

Like the iPhone, you can bet that the HTC HD2 will have an abundance of accessories, some offered directly through T-Mobile and others through websites like Think HD2, who seems to already have a number of HTC HD2 Accessories. Before you know it you’ll find HTC HD2 Cases, HD2 Chargers, HD2 Batteries and may be, just maybe an HTC HD2 Hobo Cardboard Case (wouldn’t bet on this one though). The first of which will probably be HTC HD2 Screen Protectors and then to some HTC HD2 Silicone Cases and so forth. Regardless, support for the phone will undoubtedly add or detract from the success of this excellent phone.
